Classroom Meal Time

Meal time is about so much more than just eating. There are many different skills a child learns through family style meals: taking turns, pre-reading and pre-math skills, problem solving skills, fine motor skills, etc. Menu writing is also done in the classroom before meals and snacks.

Teachers discuss with children what foods they are eating while providing a literacy aspect through drawing the foods, and sounding and writing out the name of the foods with the children. Children are encouraged to set the table, serve themselves and clean up their area after eating. Children are supported in passing food, serving themselves, trying new foods, positive discussions and manners at the table.
