Head Start for Kent County celebrates the unsung heroism of parents! In this article, we will shine a spotlight on fathers, and explore how they can embrace their role as lifelong educators, leaders, and advocates for their children. Fathers possess a unique capacity to nurture and care for their children, making a positive impact on the overall well-being of the family. Research consistently shows that when fathers actively engage in their children’s lives, particularly in their education, children thrive in various aspects of their development. Join us as we emphasize the significance of father engagement in early childhood and offer practical strategies for fathers to get involved from the very beginning.
There are many ways all fathers, whether living in or out of the home, can begin influencing their children’s development earlier on. For example, fathers reading to their children regularly is linked to children’s cognitive development, academic skills, and future employment opportunities. Head Start fathers can read to their children at home or visit their child’s classroom and read their book of choice to students. Another way fathers can develop a positive father-child relationship is through interactive play. When a father plays with their child, they learn how their child views the world, which helps the father to find better ways of interacting and communicating with their child. Through play, children develop executive functions such as making decisions, being organized, regulating emotions, etc.
Additionally, fathers can make a lasting impact through participation in the WATCH D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students) program. Each Head Start site invites fathers, father-figures, and male community members to spend time at the site, providing positive male role models for children. You can get started by visiting this link: https://hs4kc.org/job/watch-d-o-g-s-sylvan/. Your interactions with preschoolers in the hallways, playground, gym, and in the classroom will leave long-lasting memories to your child and other kids as well. Finally, Head Start also provides Dads Cafes—father-to-father conversations that engage fathers in rich, healthy discussions on fatherhood and parenting issues and to build positive connections with their peers.
Please let us know how we can support your efforts to build a strong foundation for your child’s future while creating lasting memories with them. Given the power of father engagement, we will partner with you by providing resources to support your role as your child’s lifelong advocate, educator, leader, and champion!
